Ladell Smith Arrested for Sexually Assaulting Child in Church Bathroom
Ladell Smith has been arrested for sexually assaulting a minor under the age of 10 in a church bathroom.
Smith was apprehended by peace officers a short time after the assault took place. The victim was found on the scene, physically unharmed. Both Smith and the victim were members of the Word of Life Christian Fellowship Church’s congregation. Smith faces several counts of felony child molestation and sexual assault. The charges also include counts of forcible lewd acts upon a child and oral copulation or sexual penetration. Police believe that there may be other victims.
It’s a sad day for any community when such an appalling crime occurs—especially in a place deemed to be sacred, such as a church. Unfortunately, children are not safe from sex assaults anywhere they go, be it school, church, daycare, or even a relative’s home. As a result, adults who are close to a child and have professional trust vested in them by the community may abuse that trust in order to abuse the child.
Warning Signs of Sex Abuse
As a parent, you should be aware for the signs and signals of child abuse. If your child speaks often of a new and adult friend, obtains gifts or money from a mysterious source, acts secretively, is suddenly aware of technical terms or slang for body parts, acts in a lewd or seductive manner, cries frequently, becomes withdrawn or reticent, or begins bedwetting or regressing to more juvenile behaviors, he or she may have been sexually abused. You should get the basic information from your child—only the essential facts—and then make a police report. Don’t get angry at your child, or you may intimidate them too much to tell you the whole story.
